⇒ one has no right or power to control s.o. or give orders to s.o.:

- X can't lay down the law to Y;

- X can't order <boss> Y around;

- Y doesn't <won't> take orders from X.

     ♦ О Л у кашине заговорили в районе. Кто? Откуда такой смельчак взялся, что ему и Подрезов не указ? (Абрамов 1). People in the district office started talking about Lukashin. Who was he? Where did this hothead come from, who doesn't even take orders from Podrezov? (1a).

2. [subj: human, collect, or abstr]

⇒ there is no reason why some person (organization etc) should be looked upon as a model, standard for s.o. (often because the person or organization in question does not deserve to be so looked upon):

- X Y-y не указ{{}}≈ X is not an example for Y to follow;

- X is no example for Y;

- Y is not obliged to do what X does.
